Goodbye GMOs - Restaurants & Food to Go Producer React to Consumer Wrap Requests

Chipotle & its tortilla suppliers, Bread Lab, USA are still on a quest to develop preservative-free & dough conditioner-free tortillas following a pledge to remove GMOs from their tortillas. Chipotle became the first national restaurant company to voluntarily disclose GMO ingredients in its food in 2015, and pledged at that time to move to non-GMO ingredients for all of its food.  However, Zinda Foods UK has already innovated & launched a preservative-free and palm-oil free wrap base.

Our unique AirWrap base launched in selected Tesco stores in London in early January 2019. It is proving to be a hit with consumers who are searching for fresh GMO free solutions to their lunch time needs. Our AirWrap uses a unique handmade technique in production and with its distribution through Tesco means customers get wraps that are not only fresh, affordable, convenient but most importantly delicious too.

Zinda's exclusive, first-to-market wrap base, the AirWrap®, is handcrafted with all natural ingredients, no preservatives & no palm oil with a texture thinner, lighter and softer than the traditional wraps found on UK supermarket shelves. It also contains less fat & salt enabling a far more enjoyable and healthier way to eat a wrap. The range launched in Tesco with RRP from £2.98 but as it is part of the Tesco lunchtime mealdeal, for just £3 lunchtime shoppers can enjoy an AirWrap plus a packet of hand-cooked crisps like Tyrrells and an energising smoothie such as innocent.

The Global GMO labelling market is expected to grow considerably up to 2023 as a reaction to consumer calls for more transparency on what is in the products they eat. This mandatory labelling requires food manufacturers to mention the GMO ingredients on the labels of GMO products. Around 64 countries around the world, almost 40% of the world's population, including Europe, Russia, Japan, Brazil, Australia, China, India, South Africa, Germany, and others, are labelling their GMO food products.

A recent report named Chipotle along with the following as leading vendors in the GMO labelling area: Campbell Soup, Kellogg Company, ConAgra Foods Inc., General Mills, Chipotle, Kerry Ingredients, Organic Valley, Danone, Ingredion Incorporated, Nature’s Path Foods, Amy’s Kitchen, Earthbound Farm, White Wave Foods, and Whole Foods

The report cites the following drivers, restraints and opportunities in GMO labelling

Drivers
– Growing Consumer Awareness
– Public Organisations Forcing Companies to Label Their Products

Restraints
– False Claims
– Non-Uniform Labelling Rules across Different Regions

Opportunities
– Increasing Consumer Demand for Non-GMO Products

At Zinda Foods we welcome these moves and look forward to working with and talking to forward thinking companies like the above. Chipotle recently selected California-based vegan seafood startup Sophie’s Kitchen for its Chipotle Cultivate Foundation mentorship program, which works with companies it believes are promoting sustainable change in the food industry. Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol said the companies “represent the best and brightest of what’s next in the food industry.”
